Top tips for a neat, tidy, organised loft.

For years you’ve been meaning to sort out your loft so it’s a useable space, and now you have finally done it! That all-important loft ladder has been installed, your loft has been boarded, you’ve even added some loft lighting, so how do you avoid cluttering it up like your garage or the spare bedroom dumping ground?

Organisation is the answer! Start as you mean to go on. Plan your storage, think about the items being stored, how often you will need to gain access to them. Maybe you are storing memorabilia for various people, so labelling is key so it’s obvious who’s belongings they are.

Storage boxes

Sometimes it can be overwhelming when looking at the variety of storage solutions available on the high street. Small boxes, large boxes, boxes with lids, stacking boxes etc….

Boxes with lids are perfect for keeping items dust free and clean in the loft – this is what we would recommend. The transparent variety allows you to see the contents inside, they’re easy to stack, space-saving and are robust too.

Vacuum storage bags

These are great for ‘change of season items’ such as bedding and clothes as the vacuum helps to compact them making them space-saving and easy to store. Vacuum storage means you can keep things dry and stowed away, but not always easy to temporarily take things back out of the loft storage.

Shelving

Create shelving units as these are perfect to help save floor space and can sit comfortably against an exterior/joining wall. Newer build houses generally have trusses for shelves to be added simply. Chalk is ideal for labelling the trusses so you can see where items are stored at a glance – making access to those items stored in the loft easy to find.

Where to store?

It might sound obvious but think about where you are putting your items.

If you have things to store in the loft that are rarely used, you won’t need access as those that are frequently used, so you can put them to the back of the loft for safekeeping. Keep things closer to the loft hatch that you need more regularly – even if it is just once a year collecting those Christmas decorations!

Also don’t forget that free floor space is needed to move around and also helps to keep things stored in the loft less cluttered, so remember to leave room for manoeuvring.

Our biggest top tip for storing things in the loft is labelling – keeping things labelled is key and it saves time in the long run!
