A question we often get asked is where is the best place for a loft hatch?
They are generally found on the landing or hallway, occasionally they can be in a bedroom, bathroom or even a cupboard.
Cupboards are a nice place to hide a hatch but not at all practical to fit a ladder into as you will need a good amount of space around the ladder to get in the loft easily. Especially when you’re carrying or passing items up into the loft.
We don’t generally recommend putting the hatch in a room, especially bedrooms and this can limit your options on where any future furniture may go, imagine not being able to fit a bed in a bedroom because you will never be able to access the loft again!!! Bathrooms are often tricky spots to fit a ladder and normally have a smooth and sometimes slippery floor, not ideal for landing a ladder on.
The best place more often than not is the hallway/landing, a space where you are unlikely to be moving furniture around and having to dictate the layout of the room for those occasional trips up to the loft. Most landings have a safe area away from the stairs to access your loft. On the rare occasions we can not gain access from your preferred location we will use our experience to find the next best spot for you. On occasions it is not what’s happening below the loft that dictates the access point but what’s happening in the loft…. a low section of roof, a chimney stack, unmovable pipes to name a few.
Sometimes just using a different type of ladder can give you more options and overcome potential game stoppers.
