Let’s be realistic, getting into a loft that hasn’t been used for some time isn’t always going to be at the top of your to-do list.  In fact, it’s probably right at the bottom.  So how can you build up the motivation to get started and where do you start?

Three wise words, small…baby…steps.

Be brave, firstly go and take stock of the condition of your loft and see what is actually in there, then you can move onto the next step.  At the moment, more than ever, people are having to organise, declutter and streamline their homes due to the increase in home working, so having a clear loft that is safe to use, is the perfect solution to store unused items.

The next step – once you can see the loft area is clear and safe, time to get to grips with all those items you need to store. Are they in good condition or do they just need recycling or being disposed of? If items are broken and you haven’t fixed them in the past 12 months, you probably never will. Then take the sentiment test, if your house was on fire, would you rush to keep those items? That sounds harsh but it really helps to make a decision. Store precious meaningful items in a memory box.

Are you keeping items due to guilt? You can’t throw it out as old Auntie Nelly gave it to you years ago! If it really doesn’t mean anything or has no value, free yourself of guilt and dispose of it!!

Once you have decided what to keep, make sure everything is neatly packed in boxes – see our tips on how to organise items and stack things neatly in your loft, clearly labelled and if you are super organised, keep a catalogue of everything that’s in the loft.

Ease of entry to your loft is paramount, you just want to be able to open the hatch, pull down a ladder and up you go to get what you need or store away more items.
